Hurricanes Helene and Milton Lead to Port Closures and Supply Chain Disruptions

clarkespositolaw

Last month brought devastation to the southeastern United States as hurricanes Helene and Milton made landfall. As the hurricanes unfolded, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) played a critical role in disaster response. Prior to Hurricane Milton’s landfall, CBP ordered Ports of Entry across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina to take preemptive measures, safeguarding employees, assets, and facilities. After the storm passed, CBP immediately began recovery operations, conducting facility assessments, deploying search and rescue teams, and coordinating efforts with other federal and state agencies. CBP’s Air and Marine Operations (AMO), U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), and Office of Field Operations (OFO) teams provided specialized expertise to assist local authorities, further supporting the safe recovery of these vital transportation hubs.

As businesses assess the damage and work towards recovery, it is vital to consider the implications of these hurricanes on long-term logistics strategies. Companies should evaluate their supply chain resilience, invest in contingency plans, and explore alternative routes to minimize future disruptions. The increasing frequency of severe weather events underscores the need for proactive measures to adapt to changing conditions.
